James is founder and chief executive of Swayable, a media analytics company based in California and New York, backed by Y Combinator, Higher Ground Labs, New Media Ventures and Lowercase Capital.

He was previously Vice President and Chief of Operations of NYT Global, the international digital team of The New York Times, where he worked with designers, journalists, technologists and marketers to build the next generation of digital experiences for the hundreds of millions of people who read The New York Times globally. He also worked as a founding partner at New York-based social change agency Purpose, as a strategy consultant at McKinsey, and co-founded the sharing economy organization Peers.org, working with the Airbnb founding team.

Originally from Australia, James moved to the U.S. to earn a PhD in experimental physics at Cornell University. He was later appointed by Harvard as an affiliate to the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. He is a fellow at Australia’s Center for Policy Development and co-authored a book on climate change policy and economics. Origin Magazine named him "one of the top creatives changing the world”.
